Hopefully this graph will graphically illustrate just how important experience is in reducing crash risks for all ages of driver.

The green lines – plotted for different age groups – shows how fast the risk drops off extremely quickly as new drivers get some miles under their belt. The chart also shows that the age at which you pass your test makes a difference, with those aged 17 initially twice as likely to have an accident as those who are 60. This illustrates that while experience is important for all, young drivers face an extra risk just because of their physiological makeup which is changing rapidly through their late teens and early twenties.
