In car gadgets such as DVD players and Sat-nav systems could injure car passengers even at low-crash speeds according to new research from DEKRA, a German research body.
Equipment, attached to front seat headrests could turn into dangerous missiles in rear-end, town centre-style impacts at speeds as low as 18mph. One particular DVD player, attached with velcro strips did significant damage to a child sized test dummy. The current EuroNCAP safety tests to not consider the typical add-ons made to a car and it is important that manufactures are pressured to crash test their products. Many everyday items can be turned into weapons in a crash situation and motorists should be encouraged to secure equipment to reduce the risk in the event of a collision.
