The RAC Foundation for Motoring is an independent research charity established to promote the environmental, economic, mobility and safety issues relating to use of motor vehicles.
The Foundation has historical links to the Royal Automobile Club and RAC Breakdown but is now legally distinct from both.
Our vision is to advocate innovative transport solutions for safer roads, safer drivers, greener cars, improved mobility and a fair deal for motorists.
Has somebody at the RAC Foundation got shares in the technology companies involved with Road Pricing ?
Whilst I acknowledge that something has to be done about the future rise in vehicles on our roads there seems no justification for creating the costs of another layer of admin as well as as the cost of the technology involved as well as creating something else to go wrong etc.
Fuel duty is a perfectly adequate way of road pricing where the ‘charge’ can be varied as necessary. There is no extra burden on admin costs and large cars pay more automatically. It might be necessary to more firmly hypothocate the funds raised but what more can you want ?
Another problem that is not helped by either of these approaches is the clogging of our suburban streets with parked cars particularly at night time. No garages, multi cars ownership per family with no parking space and a noticeable increase in the presence of commercial vehicles which are parked locally to the driver rather than at a depot. OpenReach is a classic example
